‘‘Friends of the Earth’’ protests chanted slogans on Thursday 7th of August, 2014 outside the Ministry of Interior, held following the decision on the development of golf courses and construction of villa houses in Polis Chrysochous, a home for the Loggerhead sea turtles.
The protesters held banners and chanted slogans such as ‘‘the people demand the Caretta-caretta to be saved, Leave the nature as it is, alone’’. The reason for the protest was to protect the lake in Polis Chrysochous from the construction of Golf courses and Villas in order to save the Caretta-caretta sea turtles.
Members of the organisation subsequently gathered outside of the Ministry of Agriculture, dressed as golfers holding golf clubs attached to stuffed turtle toys hitting them symbolically, protesting against the decision over the destruction of the Lake in favour of golf courses, hotels and villas.
The Green party reinforced the protest of the Organisation ‘’FoE’’ and particularly the General Secretary of the Green Party George Perdikis, who attended the event, declared that the Lake in Polis Chrysochous is perhaps considered to be the most important habitat for the loggerhead sea turtle in the Mediterranean area and has been included in the program ‘‘Natura’’. He also added that he is aware of the fact that the EU was notified by the Green Party and other environmental groups about the destruction of the Lake, and has warned the Government that actions as such would lead them to the European Court.
